Project Details

IPW recently advised Got Event, a company owned by the City of Gothenburg that manages events at the city’s sports venues, on options for the long-term future of the Scandinavium. An iconic city landmark and civic asset, the 14,000 capacity arena is increasingly challenged to attract and host events, and in need of a series of key upgrades to meet current/ future event requirements given industry changes since it opened in 1971, and to better maximise overall financial performance and audience experience in keeping with a modern, fit for purpose arena.

We explored the city’s key strategic drivers and how these relate to the relative merits of both a new arena and urban development on the existing plot and the potential renovation and extension of the current building. Our engagement, delivered with support from a leading international venue operator, included industry benchmarking and projecting trends in arena content/ programming, identifying key sustainability considerations (economic, social, and environmental) and advising on best practice in urban development and city integration, delivered through a series of case studies.

The city decided in 2023 to replace the arena with a new facility next to the current Scandinavium, ensuring no break in service.
